Kris Kristofferson – “Why Me Lord”: A Song Born from Redemption
The Story Behind the Song
In 1973, Kris Kristofferson achieved his biggest solo success with “Why Me Lord,” a deeply personal and spiritual ballad. The song topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and even crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 16.
Featured on his Jesus Was a Capricorn album, the track included backing vocals from his then-wife, Rita Coolidge, and country artist Larry Gatlin. Over the years, it has been reinterpreted by legends like Elvis Presley, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and others, solidifying its place as a gospel classic.
A Life-Changing Moment of Faith
The inspiration for “Why Me Lord” came during a turning point in Kristofferson’s life. Despite his rising fame in the early 1970s, he was grappling with inner turmoil. Following a performance with fellow country artists, Kristofferson joined friends at Jimmie Snow’s church.
That night, something extraordinary happened. When Pastor Jimmie asked if anyone felt lost, Kristofferson – who rarely attended church – found himself raising his hand. The Pastor then invited those ready to accept Jesus to come forward. Overwhelmed by emotion, Kristofferson walked to the front of the church, weeping in public as he experienced a profound sense of forgiveness and redemption he hadn’t realized he needed.
Though he doesn’t recall the exact words spoken that evening, the impact of that moment stayed with him. It was in this raw and vulnerable state that “Why Me Lord” was born, encapsulating his gratitude, humility, and newfound faith.
A Timeless Gospel Anthem
Kristofferson’s heartfelt lyrics and earnest delivery resonated with listeners, making the song a spiritual touchstone for many. Its gospel roots, paired with his rugged voice, create a powerful narrative of redemption and grace – a message that continues to inspire decades later.
Lyrics
Why me Lord, what have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I’ve known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth loving You
Or the kindness You’ve shown
Lord help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it
So help me Jesus, I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve needed you
So Help me Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand
Tell me Lord, if you think there’s a way
I can try to repay
All I’ve taken from You
Maybe Lord, I can show someone else
What I’ve been through myself
On my way back to You
Lord, help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it
So Help me Jesus, I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve needed you
So help me Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand
Lord, help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it
So Help me Jesus, I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve needed you
So help me Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand
Jesus, my soul’s in Your handAdvertisement
