Eagles – “The Best of My Love”

About the Song

Despite initial doubts, “The Best of My Love” became the Eagles’ first chart-topping hit and a cornerstone of their early success. Released on November 5, 1974, as part of the On the Border album, this heartfelt ballad blends country and rock influences, showcasing the band’s signature harmonies and emotional depth.

Ironically, Glenn Frey never wanted the song released as a single. At the time, the Eagles were transitioning away from their country roots, seeking a more rock-oriented sound under the guidance of new producer Bill Szymczyk. Their shift was underscored by the addition of guitarist Don Felder, whose contributions brought energy to tracks like “Already Gone.” Yet, a ballad from their earlier sessions with former producer Glyn Johns defied expectations to become a massive hit.

“The Best of My Love” began as a chance discovery. Frey stumbled upon its distinctive guitar tuning while experimenting with a technique he learned from then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell. However, the band struggled to complete the song, prompting a call to their collaborator J.D. Souther. He flew to London and penned the perfect bridge, transforming the track into a poignant lament about love’s fading connection.

Don Henley later reflected on the song’s themes, saying it captured the frustrations of youth and unrequited emotions. The steel guitar contributions from Bernie Leadon added a melancholic tone, complementing the reflective lyrics.

Initially, both the band and their label doubted the song’s potential as a single, considering it too slow and unconventional for radio. However, a Michigan DJ began playing it, sparking unexpected demand. By March 1, 1975, “The Best of My Love” had climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, solidifying the Eagles’ place in music history.

While it wasn’t the energetic rocker Frey envisioned, its emotional resonance and sincerity struck a chord with listeners. As J.D. Souther noted, “It’s a pretty song that feels true.” This authenticity propelled the Eagles to new heights, even as they continued evolving their sound.

Lyrics

Every night I’m lyin’ in bed
Holdin’ you close in my dreams
Thinkin’ about all the things that we said
And comin’ apart at the seams
We try to talk it over
But the words come out to rough
I know you were tryin’
to give me the best of your love

Beautiful faces and loud, empty places
Look at the way that we live
Wastin’ our time on cheap talk and wine
Left us so little to give
That same old crowd
Was like a cold dark cloud
That we could never rise above
But here in my heart I give you the best of my love
Oh sweet darlin’ you get the best of my love, oh
Sweet darlin’, you get the best of my love

I’m goin’ back in time
And it’s a sweet dream
It was a quiet night
And I would be all right
If i could go on sleepin’
But every mornin’
I wake up and worry
What’s gonna happen today
You see it your way
And I see it mine
But we both see it slippin’ away

You know we always had each other baby
I guess that wasn’t enough
Oh, but here in my heart
I give you the best of my love
Oh, sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love
Oh, sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love
Every night and day,
You get the best of my love
Oh, sweet darlin’ you get the best of my love
Oh, sweet darlin’ you get the best of my love..
etc..
