Bert Kaempfert, born in Germany in 1923, began his musical journey in the German Navy band during World War II before forming his own big band. As a composer, arranger, and producer, Kaempfert achieved international acclaim with hits like “Wonderland by Night,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961 and established him as a global music sensation.

Milt Gabler, a Harlem-born son of Jewish immigrants, was a pioneering figure in the music industry. Known for founding Commodore Records, Gabler was instrumental in releasing iconic tracks such as Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit.” Later, as the head of A&R at Decca Records, he worked with legendary artists like Bill Haley and Brenda Lee. Gabler and Kaempfert’s collaboration began when Kaempfert brought “Wonderland by Night” to Decca, leading to their partnership on “L-O-V-E.”

Initially appearing as an instrumental on Kaempfert’s 1964 album Blue Midnight, the song gained new life when Nat King Cole recorded it. Released as the title track of his 1965 album, “L-O-V-E” became a Top 20 hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Cole’s velvety voice and charming delivery elevated the song, turning it into an enduring symbol of romance.

“L-O-V-E” also found a place in popular culture, notably featuring in the opening sequence of the 1998 film The Parent Trap, ensuring its continued resonance with new generations.
