Presley’s Rendition of “Unchained Melody”: A Timeless Classic in Music History.0h
In July 1977, Elvis Presley graced the stage for what would become one of his last concert performances, drawing throngs of fans to an arena in Rapid City, South Dakota. Despite being past his prime, Elvis poured his heart and soul into singing “Unchained Melody.” Although he would make a few more concert appearances following this CBS special, “Elvis In Concert,” this particular performance etched itself as one of his final and most unforgettable moments before his untimely passing in August 1977.
Presley’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” soared to acclaim, selling millions of copies and solidifying his recording as a classic of the burgeoning rock and roll era. The concert footage portrays an Elvis visibly unwell, seemingly grappling for breath as he addressed the audience before taking a seat at the piano to accompany himself. Yet, once he began to sing, his robust voice remained stirring and resonant as he delivered the familiar ballad.
Despite his faded youth and waning fame, Elvis sang with fervor and poignancy, as if sensing the end drawing near. Perhaps, as he crooned the words “Wait for me,” he yearned to reclaim past glories. However, less than three months later, his body and spirit succumbed to the ravages of time, leaving his final remarkable performance as a bittersweet swan song. It served as a fitting yet fleeting last glimpse of the legendary artist.

Lyric
Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered for your touch, a long lonely time
And time goes by, so slowly and time can do so much
Are you, still mine?
I need your love, I need your love
God speed your love to meAdvertisementLonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the waiting arms of the sea
Lonely rivers cry, wait for me, wait for me
To the open arms, wait for meMy love, my darling, I’ve hungered for your kiss
Are you still mine?
I need your love, I need your love
God, speed your love, to me
